On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Information Also Available at INFO KONRAD Without Visit to the Mine

Pupils of the Salzgitter Bad High School, their major field of study being politics, paid a visit to the information centre of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection at Chemnitzer Straße 27 in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. For one and a half hours, the pupils of grade 12 had the opportunity to pose their questions and to discuss the problems associated with radioactive waste disposal with Arthur Junkert, staff member of INFO KONRAD.

The topic “nuclear energy” as part of the semester topic “Energy Policy in Flux” is currently their subject at school and will be dealt with until the end of term reports will be issued. The visit to INFO KONRAD, which included a lecture adapted to the needs of the course, was intended for visualising the subject dealt with and, thus, consolidating recently attained knowledge. After all, the topic is a mandatory examination subject in the central high school diploma. The more engaged was the class.

Today’s visit has still increased the interest in Konrad. Now the pupils want to see where the radioactive waste will be stored. Within the scope of a visit to the mine they will have the opportunity. In some weeks, the pupils of the Salzgitter Bad High School will go up to 1300 metres under the earth’s surface.

Informative meetings at INFO KONRAD can also be carried out without visiting the mine. Should you wish to visit us in a group and be interested in a lecture, please contact us by calling 0049 5341 8673099 or sending an e-mail to info@endlager-konrad.de.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
