On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Gebhardshagen Secondary School Explores KONRAD

Within the scope of geography lessons, head of secondary school Schrader and his pupils of grade 10 paid a visit to INFO KONRAD and the Konrad mine.

Already in previous lessons the pupils had dealt with the future repository. Things the class had learnt were now to be exemplified through a visit to INFO KONRAD and the mine.

As his grandfather had worked in the mine, Julien Behler had already known Konrad previously, before the topic was dealt with in class. However, the 16-year-old had not delved into the repository topic. He had not known that low-level and medium-level radioactive waste would come to Salzgitter. Julien considers himself well-informed through the offer of the info centre of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. Also his classmates made positive remarks about INFO KONRAD. The comprehensive scope of information is important to the pupils as they have to prove their knowledge in a test.

Also Katharina Krause, Pascal Malz, and Sercan Körür knew prior to the geography lessons that the Konrad mine existed. However, it was in the geography lessons and during their visit in Chemnitzer Straße that the youths got more details about the mine and which types of waste will be emplaced into the future repository. Apart from the increase in knowledge on such a day, the pupils were glad to be out of school and that there was no need for staying seated all the time.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
