Federal Office for Radiation Protection informs with new website about Asse II repository

To be able to provide even more information about what is going on in the Asse II repository, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has established a new, clearly arranged website. From now on, you will find everything worth knowing on the status of work and planning relating to the decommissioning of Asse II at www.endlager-asse.de.

The purpose of the new website is to provide all interested citizens with access to the complex topic of Asse II so that they can get a picture of the topic. Therefore, the website offers easy-to-understand animations (filmlets) for everyone dealing with Asse for the first time. “Asse in six steps” is a virtual tour communicating in a few stages key information also to people having no previous experience. There are also videos with additional animations, this part of the website being continuously updated.

The measured levels of environmental radioactivity in the Asse area and in near-by Kissenbrück can be directly accessed via an extra module. All editions of the leaflet “Insights into the Asse Mine” published so far and information brochures and latest news can be found on the website.

Experts and everyone who want to delve into the topic additionally find comprehensive expert reports, studies, and application documents on Asse and the annual reports on environmental monitoring.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
