BfS intends to investigate Asse seismically
Improve knowledge of mine / licence agreements with owners
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection intends to carry out seismic measurements to improve the available knowledge of the Asse mine (3-D seismic survey). The measurements will take about three months, the results will probably be available in 2013. Gesellschaft für Geophysikalische Dienste from Leipzig has been commissioned with the preplanning of the work.
Among others, sound waves are generated with so-called vibration vehicles which are then recorded by so-called geophones, just like with a microphone. Through the geo-physical evaluation and modelling the experts get a three-dimensional model of the geological layers which is considerably more detailed than the two-dimensional measurements already carried out in the Asse area by the former operator.
With the help of this spatial representation, the geological structure of the overburden can be determined more exactly; information on the position of layers, faults or distortions is gained; and there is a spatially distributed representation of the underground structures. The data is to be collected in an area measuring 18 square kilometres in the area of Wittmar, Mönchevahlberg, Groß Vahlberg, Remlingen, and Klein Biewende.
To be able to collect the data, the company dealing with the measurements will have to access premises in the area to be investigated. The experts will have to lay cables, install geophones and set up transmission points. For this purpose, licence agreements will be concluded with the owners beforehand. Prior to accessing the premises there will be an inventory, after completion of works, possibly occurring damages will be recorded and compensated.
Since 1988 water flows into the Asse mine. The exact path of the influent water has not been known so far. With the additional knowledge gained by the measurements, a better planning of technical measures will be possible. The BfS will respond to questions asked by affected citizens in a public informative meeting on Thursday, 3 June at 7 p.m. in Dorfgemeinschaftshaus Remlingen.
