Find out for yourself what it is like in an over 100-year-old former salt mine. Staff members of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the Asse-GmbH operating company accompany you on a journey underground and explain the background of the mine’s history, the running projects and the challenges associated with the planned decommissioning.

Tours are offered from Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. Groups of up to 14 persons can book a visit to the mine. Lead-time for applications is ca. four weeks in advance. Therefore, please book as early as possible. Persons aged 16 or above may take part in visiting tours, minors must be accompanied by an adult or need a declaration of consent by a parent or legal guardian.

Please note that specific climatic conditions prevail underground that could strain the cardiovascular system. It is essential that the visitors are basically fit, since part of the way needs to be walked on foot. You will get further information on visits to the mine in our visitors’ information sheet or by phone or directly at the INFO ASSE.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
