On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Pursuing the progress in constructing the repository to scale

Those looking for information about the planned Konrad repository for waste with negligible heat generation and intermediate-level radioactive waste find a bulk of material at the information centre Chemnitzer Straße. Among others, a scale model of the future repository documents the construction progress.

New information on new topics

Updating the exhibition in the Konrad information centre has nearly been completed. Apart from information boards on geology, the state and the conversion of the repository, topics such as radiation protection, packaging and transport of the radioactive waste, and environmental monitoring are dealt with.

Animations help understand complex correlations

New animations on ionising radiation and the development of the geological situation of Konrad visualise the complex topic. On several interactive boards and one touch screen visitors can look for information themselves. Large-format photos give the visitor an idea of the mine underground and the works carried out there.

Scale model of the repository

A highlight of the exhibition is the exact model of the repository. Not only is the exact geographic location of the Konrad mine and its extension underground given on a scale of 1:2500, but also the progress in the conversion of the mine into the first repository licensed pursuant to the Atomic Energy Act. For example, the model was recently supplemented by the newly built emplacement chambers, the emplacement gallery and the new road connection from the K39 to the Konrad 2 premises.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
