On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Pupils in 2013 still strongly interested in disposal

In 2013 educational institutions show as much interest in the planned Konrad repository and the Konrad information centre in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, Chemnitzer Strasse, as ever.

This was confirmed by the pupils of Gebhardshagen secodary school (grade 10), who visited the mine on January 24 after listening to an introduction at the Konrad information centre. Their teacher, Ms. Elke Efken, regularly takes her pupils to the information centre and the Konrad mine when she teaches physics classes. It is important, she says, that young people learn to tackle the topic of disposal of radioactive waste and to ask critical questions with respect to the facts they are presented with. So the pupils asked questions concerning the mine and disposal in general, but also questions focussing on the current measures taken on site and at the Schachtanlage Asse II.

As many as ten educational institutions have taken the opportunity to visit the mine in January alone. In 2012, a total of 55 groups from schools, universities and academies came to see the Konrad mine with their own eyes.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
