On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

Learning Made Easy

Clearness makes learning easier. For this reason, the teachers of the Ratsgymnasium in Goslar, Jörg Zellmer and Franz-Josef Peter, used the offer of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and visited INFO KONRAD together with their pupils. Subsequent to the introduction in Chemnitzer Straße 27 lasting one hour, they visited the mine.

On account of the information material issued by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, the 39-year-old Jörg Zellmer got the idea – together with pupils from his chemistry class – to have a look at where the radioactive waste will be disposed of later on. Not only do the teachers want to communicate pure knowledge but it is also their aim to capacitate them to think critically. This, however, requires sufficient information. To Peter it is particularly important that the pupils see “that nuclear energy and radioactive waste management are a global problem".

The 19-year-old Daniel Hoffmann considered himself comprehensively informed after the presentation in INFO KONRAD. “I found it especially interesting that it had taken such a long time until Konrad was licensed to become a repository for radioactive waste. After all, it took two years.” Also Daniel’s schoolmate Julia Sophie Sachse was enthused of the visit to the information centre. “All our questions were answered in an open and honest manner”, 18-year-old Julia said.

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
