On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). This website of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) will therefore no longer be updated and displays the status as on 24 April 2017. You will find current information at the BGE: www.bge.de

BfS Experts and Trainees of Salzgitter AG Jointly Discover Konrad

It’s not only local citizens of the Salzgitter region who are interested in Konrad. Apart from trainees of Salzgitter AG, experts of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection caught up on the repository project

The heads of the national ODL measuring facilities came to Salzgitter and visited INFO KONRAD. Subsequently, they visited the mine. Their work is not directly associated with Konrad. It is, however, in an indirect way, since the ODL measuring network also monitors the environmental radioactivity in the region around Konrad.

Ulrich Stöhlker has been with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and its predecessor authority for 21 years. In Freiburg, the 52-year-old is head of section IMIS Measuring Tasks. Together with his colleagues, he used this opportunity to connect a meeting at BfS in Salzgitter with a visit to the mine. Like in every visit to the mine, there was an introduction at INFO KONRAD. Stöhlker was especially glad that the permanent exhibition at Chemnitzer Straße 27 also provides information about his field of work – environmental radioactivity. “The presentation is very comprehensive and well elaborated”, the BfS expert said. He praised the attendance through the INFO KONRAD team during the entire event. “It was also important that we could directly ask questions. The answers always were very detailed and descriptive, so that all of us know more than we did before.”

In contrast to the trainees of Salzgitter AG, Stöhlker had already been to Konrad previously. For them this was the first time! The prospective industrial mechanics were especially enthused by the underground ride in the Jeep. However, they thought it was a pity that there were so few stoppages. Ines Bräse had not known a lot about Konrad so far. “The film shown at INFO KONRAD is of a really good quality. It has especially answered many questioned which I would probably not have asked in this way”, the 21-year-old from Braunschweig said. Her fellow trainee Julian Bugdoll had not had any previous knowledge of Konrad. He only knew Konrad in connection with the film “The wonder of Lengede”. “After today I really do know more.”

Transfer of operator responsibilities

On 25 April 2017, the operator responsibilities for the Asse II mine as well as the Konrad and Morsleben repositories were transferred to the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH, BGE). Previously, the responsibility for the projects was with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The foundations for the change of operatorship are laid down in the "Act on the Realignment of the Organisational Structures in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal", which became effective on 30 July 2016. The BfS focusses on the federal tasks of radiation protection, for example in the field of defence against nuclear hazards, medical research, mobile communication, UV protection or the measuring networks for environmental radioactivity.
